Indonesia’s eighth president, Prabowo Subianto, was sworn in on Sunday, taking over from Joko Widodo after a decade in office. The inauguration ceremony in Jakarta was attended by foreign dignitaries.
Prabowo, a former defense minister, won the election in February by a large margin. After the ceremony, the 73-year-old president headed to the presidential palace, where he was greeted by his predecessor.
In his emotional speech, Prabowo vowed to be a leader for all Indonesians, focusing on national unity and the well-being of vulnerable groups. He emphasized priorities such as food security and the responsible management of natural resources.
Continuing his predecessor’s policies, Prabowo promised to industrialize mining products and prohibit the export of raw minerals. His vice president, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Jokowi’s son, was also sworn in.
With a dedication to serve all citizens and uphold key values, Prabowo marks the beginning of a new era for Indonesia.
