Over R50m spent deporting illegal immigrants in 5 months

The EFF has raised concerns about the excessive costs of deporting illegal immigrants, totaling R52.8m between April and August. Home affairs minister Leon Schreiber disclosed in a recent parliamentary session that 19,750 undocumented immigrants were removed, marking a significant increase from the previous year.

During the Q&A, EFF MP Thapelo Mogale criticized the high deportation expenses, suggesting that the funds could be better utilized to fortify border control and prevent unauthorized entries. Mogale emphasized the long-term financial implications, estimating potential costs of over a billion if the trend continues.

He highlighted the pressing need for adequate funding for the border management agency to tackle the influx of undocumented individuals. With limited resources allocated to border security, the country remains vulnerable to irregular migration.
