McEntee to sign bilateral treaties with UAE in Abu Dhabi

Minister for Justice Helen McEntee is currently in Abu Dhabi to finalize bilateral treaties with the United Arab Emirates on extradition and mutual legal assistance. These agreements, approved by the Government last Friday, are expected to enhance cooperation between Ireland and the UAE in combating crime and streamlining extradition procedures.

Ms McEntee began discussions with her Emirati counterpart, Minister of Justice Abdullah bin Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi, last year. The Irish government views these treaties as essential in the ongoing fight against organized crime and international drug trafficking networks.

During a press conference at Government Buildings, Minister McEntee emphasized that the treaties will target criminals seeking refuge in the UAE, including notorious figures like the Kinahan family. This would allow Irish authorities to seek warrants for extradition of criminals located in the UAE, fostering a more robust legal framework for tackling transnational crime.
