Defense ministers of Japan, Britain, and Italy accelerate development of next-gen fighter jet
The defense ministers of Japan, Britain, and Italy have agreed to fast-track the joint development of a next-generation fighter jet, aiming to deploy the aircraft by 2035.
During a meeting in Naples, Italy, plans were confirmed to finalize the first public-private contract by next year. Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani, along with counterparts from the UK and Italy, discussed the project at the G7’s first-ever defense ministerial meeting.
Masami Oka, former vice minister of defense for international affairs, will lead the Global Combat Air Program (GCAP), a collaboration between the three countries. The GCAP International Government Organization (GIGO) is set to be established in the UK to oversee the aircraft’s development.
