Jaishankar Criticizes Canada in Diplomatic Dispute

Last Updated:

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar criticized Canada for its “double standards” in the midst of strained relations between India and Canada over the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil. Last week, New Delhi expelled Canadian diplomats following Ottawa’s accusations of Indian government involvement in Nijjar’s murder in British Columbia. Jaishankar highlighted the disparity in treatment between diplomats in both countries, emphasizing Canada’s restrictions on Indian diplomats trying to gather information compared to the freedom Canadian diplomats have in India. The Minister emphasized the need to address the issue and maintain people-to-people relations while pointing out the challenges posed by certain elements in Canadian politics. The escalating tensions between the two countries reflect a complex diplomatic situation that both sides are working to navigate.
