Israel Issues Demands to End Aggression Against Lebanon
Sputnik International
Israel recently presented a document to the US outlining its conditions for ceasing aggression against Lebanon. The demands include granting the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) the authority to enforce restrictions on Hezbollah’s military activities in southern Lebanon and ensuring the Israeli air force’s unfettered access to Lebanese airspace. These demands, part of discussions between Israeli officials and Washington, were shared ahead of President Joe Biden’s envoy’s visit to Beirut.
The document proposes the deployment of Lebanese troops in Hezbollah-controlled regions and calls for an update to UNIFIL’s mandate to prevent unauthorized armed groups from operating near Israel’s border. However, both Lebanon and the international community are unlikely to accept these conditions, citing concerns about violating UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and compromising Lebanon’s sovereignty.
Since the onset of the conflict on October 1, Israel has carried out extensive military operations in southern Lebanon, resulting in casualties on both sides. Despite these developments, a peaceful resolution remains uncertain.
