Iraq continues to show interest in purchasing France’s advanced Dassault Rafale fighter aircraft, specifically for air patrol operations. However, the lack of long-range Meteor air-to-air missiles may hinder the aircraft’s full potential as air superiority fighters, as reported by Forbes.
In early 2022, it was revealed that Iraq was looking to acquire 14 Rafale fighters, and discussions have since been ongoing. In January 2023, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani met with French defense companies to explore options for radar systems, Rafale aircraft, and military helicopters.
Further discussions took place in July 2023 between Iraqi Defense Minister Thabet Al-Abbasi and French Armed Forces Minister Sebastien Lecornu regarding potential radar supply. An agreement was also reached in September for the purchase of military helicopters, including Caracal H225M combat helicopters.
While Iraq continues to pursue these acquisitions, concerns remain about the limitations of the Rafale aircraft without the necessary missile capabilities. Despite this, the Iraqi government remains determined to bolster its air defense capabilities with advanced French military equipment.
