INPEX CORPORATION has partnered with Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. to explore the potential for a Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) value chain. The joint study will focus on capturing CO2 emissions in Japan and transporting them to Australia for storage, with the ultimate goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
This collaboration builds on INPEX’s existing permit for greenhouse gas storage in the Bonaparte Basin in Australia. Working with TotalEnergies CCS Australia Pty Ltd and Woodside Energy Ltd, the project aims to begin CO2 injection by 2030. This effort aligns with the Northern Territory Government’s plan for a carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) Hub in Darwin, with INPEX’s Ichthys LNG project set to benefit from the CCS solution.
INPEX is dedicated to achieving a net zero carbon society by 2050 and has identified CCUS as a key focus area. With plans to inject 2.5 million tons of CO2 annually by 2030, the company aims to lead the CCS industry through ongoing technical advancements and commercialization.
