British King and Queen Embark on Nine-Day Tour of Australia and Samoa
During a historic visit to Australia, King Charles III faced criticism from Aboriginal lawmaker Senator Lidia Thorpe, who accused the British of committing genocide against Indigenous people and demanded the return of stolen land. Despite the confrontation, the royal couple continued their nine-day tour, which also includes Samoa.
King Charles, who is on his first royal tour since his cancer diagnosis in February, emphasized the need for stronger action against climate change in his address to Australia’s Parliament. Recognizing Australia’s potential for sustainable living, Charles urged the country to lead the fight against climate change.
While Australia remains a Commonwealth realm with the British monarch as the head of state, there have been ongoing debates about the country becoming a republic. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese prefers a republic but has ruled out a referendum during the current term.
The royal visit also included laying wreaths at the Australian War Memorial and attending a church service in Sydney. Charles and Camilla’s visit highlights the importance of environmental stewardship and reconciliation with Indigenous communities in the region.
