Civil servants in Hong Kong are set to receive three days of childcare leave annually for each child under three starting in April. This new government measure, expected to benefit around 12,000 employees, is aimed at providing support for families with newborn children. Secretary for the Civil Service, Ingrid Yeung Ho Poi-yan, emphasized the need for more care for children under three as they are considered preschoolers and require closer attention.

While there are suggestions to expand the policy to cover children aged three and above, Yeung stated that the government would first assess its effectiveness before considering any adjustments. The move comes in line with the government’s efforts to promote childbirth and foster a conducive childcare environment.

Despite calls for additional measures like birthday leave from some lawmakers, Yeung remains focused on the initial implementation of childcare leave and assured a review of the policy post-implementation. This new initiative sets a precedent that private companies might follow suit to prioritize employee welfare and family support.
