In a recent interview, Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati emphasized Hezbollah’s agreement to comply with UN Resolution 1701, highlighting the government’s commitment to stability.
He underlined the importance of the Taif Agreement as a foundation for peace and stability in Lebanon, emphasizing that diplomatic solutions are still under consideration.
Mikati called for the Lebanese army to be deployed in the south of the Litani River to prevent bloodshed and enforce Resolution 1701.
Reports suggest that the US and Israel support strengthening this resolution by pushing Hezbollah to withdraw from the border with Israel.
Another resolution, 1459, is also considered by many Lebanese citizens for disarming all militias in the country. While most militias disarmed after the civil war in 1990, Hezbollah, allied with the Syrian regime, retained its weapons.
Resolution 1701 remains a crucial step towards peace and security in Lebanon, with ongoing efforts to implement key provisions.
