Gunmen attack key tunnel project in Kashmir, killing seven workers

It is the second attack on non-local workers in the disputed region since a local government was sworn in last week.

Gunmen carried out a deadly attack on laborers working on a tunnel project in Indian-administered Kashmir, killing seven people and injuring several others, in one of the worst incidents targeting civilians in the region this year. The assailants, believed to be rebels fighting against Indian rule, opened fire at a construction workers’ camp near Sonamarg, resulting in the tragic loss of lives.

The attack, which claimed the lives of migrant workers, officials, and a Kashmiri doctor, was swiftly condemned by local authorities and India’s Home Minister, promising a strong response. The tunnel project, aiming to connect the Kashmir valley with Ladakh, plays a crucial strategic role for the military in the region.

This attack follows the formation of a new local government in Kashmir last week and marks the second incident targeting non-local workers in recent days. Despite ongoing tensions and violence in the region, authorities are striving to maintain peace and security for all residents amid the complex political landscape of Kashmir.
