The Life and Legacy of Fethullah Gulen
The passing of Fethullah Gulen marks the end of a controversial chapter in Turkish politics. Gulen, a once powerful Islamic leader, passed away at the age of 83 in a US hospital, where he had been receiving treatment. A former ally of Turkish President Erdogan, their relationship soured dramatically, with Erdogan accusing Gulen of orchestrating a failed coup in 2016.
Despite living in self-imposed exile in the United States since 1999, Gulen denied any involvement in the coup. His movement, known as “Hizmet,” aimed to promote a moderate form of Islam emphasizing education, free markets, and interfaith dialogue.
