The Federal Government has taken a critical step in combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by launching a comprehensive National Action Plan. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, highlighted the urgency of addressing this health crisis through collaborative efforts under the One Health Approach.
The action plan focuses on six strategic objectives to strengthen Nigeria’s response to AMR, including enhancing leadership, increasing public awareness, and implementing infection prevention programs. Kyari emphasized the impact of AMR on livestock production and the Ministry’s commitment to responsible antimicrobial drug use in animals.
Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammed Pate, reiterated the government’s dedication to safeguarding public health, noting the global impact of AMR on mortality rates. The event also featured insights from the World Health Organization’s Country Representative and the AMR Technical Working Group Co-chair, praising Nigeria’s efforts in combating AMR.
The ceremony concluded with the unveiling of the National Action Plan on AMR and the National Genomics Surveillance Strategy, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s fight against antimicrobial resistance. This proactive approach signals a strong commitment to addressing this urgent health crisis.
