Colombia Aspires to Join BRICS and Seeks Support from India

Sputnik International

Colombian Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jorge Enrique Rojas Rodriguez, expressed Colombia’s interest in joining BRICS during discussions with India. Rodriguez mentioned that they are also coordinating with South Africa and Brazil to strengthen global south ties. In a joint statement earlier, Colombian President Gustavo Petro and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva highlighted Colombia’s desire to become a full member of BRICS with the assistance of Brazil. However, the Colombian Embassy confirmed that no delegation would attend the upcoming BRICS summit in Russia due to Petro not receiving an invitation.

BRICS, formed in 2006, currently includes Russia, Brazil, India, China, and South Africa, along with new members like Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. The annual BRICS summit in Kazan will host over 30 countries and six international organizations, showcasing the growing influence of this intergovernmental association.
