Perez, a member of the Tzotzil Indigenous Maya group, had dedicated nearly two decades to serving the community. He was known for his role as a negotiator in conflicts and as a symbol of resistance in Chiapas.
Assassination Follows Death Threats
Perez received multiple death threats due to his vocal opposition to organized crime and his efforts to promote justice and rights for Indigenous peoples. The UN human rights office in Mexico and Chiapas Governor Rutilio Escandon both condemned his assassination.
Violence in Chiapas has been on the rise, with 500 murders reported from January to August this year, compared to 309 in the same period last year.
