Britain not reconsidering Israel’s conduct in Lebanon for arms exports

The UK government has confirmed that it is not legally required to assess Israel’s compliance with international humanitarian law when granting arms export licenses. This revelation came after the suspension of 30 arms export licenses to Israel, with the exception of UK-made F-35 fighter jet components. Middle East Minister Hamish Falconer stated that no legal requirement exists to assess humanitarian law compliance in Lebanon.

Experts and advocates expressed surprise at this decision, pointing out that all exports should undergo risk assessment, including adherence to international law. The government’s move has been criticized for potentially exempting itself from international obligations.

A coalition of NGOs called for a total arms embargo on Israel due to escalating violence in Lebanon. Concerns were raised about the continued licensing of F-35 components, which have been used in Gaza and Lebanon. The government cited logistical challenges in suspending components destined for third countries.
