US funding cut criticized by UN, public generosity applauded

“WE are here to tell America the truth about what is happening,” says Mara Kronenfeld, Executive Director in US of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestinian refugees.

In an exclusive interview with Dawn, Mara Kronenfeld poured her heart out about the catastrophe in Gaza. The UNRWA, established in 1949 by the United Nations after the Nakba displacement of 750,000 refugees, has faced funding issues due to the suspension of US funding following accusations against some employees.

Despite the funding freeze, American grassroots support has surged, bridging the gap with donations reaching up to $50 million this year. The average contribution of $400 shows strong grassroots momentum. Ms Kronenfeld highlights the diverse support, mentioning donations from Palestinians, Arabs, South Asians, and even Jews.

Ms Kronenfeld criticizes the US government for withholding funding during the dire situation in Gaza, calling it a “moral stain” on the country. She also discusses the challenges faced with aid delivery into Gaza, citing deliberate obstructions by Israeli authorities.

As the situation worsens in Gaza, the importance of Zakat as a lifeline is emphasized, with UNRWA donations being Zakat-certified and tax-deductible in the US.

With international diplomacy being tested, Ms Kronenfeld hopes for empathy from ordinary people to make a difference where it’s needed most.
