Cuba’s struggle to restore power to the island faced a setback for the third time, leaving millions without electricity and raising concerns about the government’s efforts to fix the national electrical grid. The power outage began on Friday when the largest power plant on the island shut down, leading to a subsequent collapse of the grid on Saturday morning. Despite some progress in restoring power by the evening, the grid failed once again, plunging the island into darkness.
The Havana Electric company announced the total disconnection of the national electro-energetic system late on Saturday, but the post was later removed from their Telegram feed. While the reason for the removal remains unclear, millions were still without power by Sunday. Amidst the ongoing blackout, residents were seen preparing meals over open fires in Havana.
The energy ministry of Cuba reassured the public that they were working on re-establishing services, acknowledging another disconnection in the western subsystem, which includes the capital, Havana.
