Senate Voting on 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill Underway

Amidst controversy and delays, the Senate is finally voting on the 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill, known as the Constitutional Package. This legislation includes amendments such as extending the chief justice’s term. The bill, approved by the federal cabinet, aims at national development and public welfare.

Law Minister Tarar presented the bill in the Senate, clarifying that Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa is not seeking an extension. A special committee, representing all parties, discussed proposals for the bill. The proposed judicial commission will ensure a fair judgement system.

Meanwhile, PTI has decided to boycott the voting process despite having no objections to the final draft. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan expressed concerns about the bill’s processing. JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman supported PTI’s decision.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari assured that the amendment would proceed with or without PTI’s support. Senators emphasized the importance of trust in the system for successful democracy.
