Prabowo Subianto becomes Indonesia’s 8th president

Prabowo Subianto, the former defense minister of Indonesia, was inaugurated as the country’s eighth president after a landslide victory in the direct presidential election held in February. Despite being a longtime rival of the popular president Joko Widodo, who appointed him as defense chief after his reelection, Subianto emerged victorious and was sworn in with his new vice president, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the son of Widodo.

The inauguration ceremony in Jakarta was attended by leaders and officials from over 30 countries. Subianto, a former special forces commander, has promised to continue Widodo’s policies of modernization and economic growth, including the construction of a new capital on Borneo. He aims to leverage Indonesia’s abundant resources and bolster domestic industry by processing exports locally.

As the leader of the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, Subianto faces challenges such as global economic distress and regional tensions in Asia. Indonesia’s transition from dictatorship to democracy has been a remarkable journey, and Subianto’s presidency marks a new chapter in the country’s political landscape.
