Pakistan’s Cabinet approved the draft of the controversial 26th Constitutional Amendment after a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The coalition government plans to introduce judicial reforms in the Senate and National Assembly, with President Asif Ali Zardari and other key figures supporting the amendment. The amendment aims to change the retirement age for judges and tenure of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
With strict security measures in place, the government believes it has the necessary support to pass the amendment in parliament. The proposed changes have not been fully disclosed to the public, but it is suggested that they could weaken the independence of the judiciary. The PTI has decided to boycott the session, while allegations of lawmakers being coerced to support the bill have surfaced.
The government must secure a two-thirds majority vote to pass the amendment, with the JUI-F playing a crucial role. The future of the judiciary in Pakistan hangs in the balance as political parties navigate through this controversial constitutional amendment.
