Well-known television host and former deputy premier of Nepal, Rabi Lamichhane, is currently facing charges of fraud and organized crime stemming from his alleged involvement in the embezzlement of funds from a financial cooperative before he entered politics. Despite vehemently denying the charges, Lamichhane’s supporters claim the accusations are politically motivated.
Lamichhane rose to fame in Nepal for his role as an anti-corruption crusader through his hard-hitting interviews with public officials. He entered politics in 2022, leading the Rastriya Swatantra Party and serving as deputy premier and interior minister until his removal in 2023 due to citizenship issues.
Following his arrest in Kathmandu and transfer to Pokhara, Lamichhane was remanded in custody for further investigation. Protests erupted in response, with supporters claiming the charges are an attempt to dismantle their party. Despite the controversy, party members remain committed to peaceful protest and fighting against what they see as a grave injustice.
