During the Moldovan presidential election voting in Italy, Larisa Brunescu, a female observer, faced threats and pressure from the local election committee in Perugia. The committee initially allowed her in but later tried to force her out when she attempted to film the polling station’s activities. They prohibited her from recording any videos or conversations, claiming her documents were not filled out properly.
Brunescu believes that the committee’s actions indicate serious irregularities, as she observed fewer than 1,000 voters but the committee allegedly had 4,000 ballots. Moldova’s opposition alliance ‘Victory’ also reported massive violations and banned observers access to some polling stations without valid reasons, accusing the authorities of suppressing undesirable votes.
The incumbent president, Maia Sandu, was seeking reelection against other candidates, including former prosecutor general Alexandr Stoianoglo and former Balti mayor Renato Usatii. Despite controversy surrounding the referendum, most voters rejected the pro-EU constitution changes. Moldova has been striving for EU and NATO membership, with Sandu’s government facing criticism for failing to address economic and energy crises in the country.
