Defense chiefs from Japan, Britain, and Italy have agreed to expedite the joint development of a next-generation fighter jet. The three ministers met in Naples, Italy, and affirmed that the public and private sectors will sign their first contract by next year, aiming to deploy the aircraft by 2035.
Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani, along with British and Italian counterparts, discussed the project during the first-ever ministerial meeting of the Group of Seven nations in the defense field. Nakatani revealed plans to appoint Masami Oka to lead the Global Combat Air Program’s international organization.
The establishment of the GCAP International Government Organization (GIGO) is expected in Britain later this year, with Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, BAE Systems from Britain, and Leonardo S.p.A. from Italy taking on key roles in the fighter jet development.
This collaboration symbolizes the deepening security ties between Japan and Europe amidst increasing military activities from China and Russia. Nakatani, appointed by new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, is driving this strategic partnership forward.
