IGP denounces burning of police station, killing of suspects in Agenebode

By Kingsley Omonobi

The Nigeria Police Force has strongly denounced the recent surge in cases of vigilante justice, commonly known as jungle justice, in various parts of the country. This dangerous and abhorrent trend has had severe repercussions on the nation’s criminal justice system, rule of law, and international reputation.

Recent incidents in Agenebode, Edo State, and Agege, Lagos State, where mobs attacked police stations, dragged out suspects, and resorted to violence have raised significant concerns. The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a thorough investigation by the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) to ensure that all those involved face legal consequences.

The Nigeria Police Force emphasizes that jungle justice undermines justice, human rights, and the rule of law. The tragic loss of lives and destruction of property as a result of these vigilante actions portray a distorted view of justice and due process. By condemning these acts and urging the public to refrain from taking the law into their hands, the police aim to uphold the principles of the rule of law and maintain public safety.
