The IDF is making a historic change by outsourcing the repair and maintenance of its armored vehicles to Israeli defense industry companies. This decision comes as a response to the urgent need highlighted during the prolonged conflict with Hezbollah and Hamas. Previously, the repairs were solely handled by the IDF’s Technology and Maintenance Corps.
With the Defense Ministry set to issue tenders for this outsourcing, local industries may also take on part of the armored vehicle production. The wear and tear on these vehicles due to ongoing operations necessitate immediate attention to ensure continuous functionality.
Additionally, the restoration of all armored vehicles to full readiness post-conflict is a lengthy process that requires collaboration with external entities. Heavy industries specializing in metalwork are being considered for these tasks, with companies like Israel Shipyards and Elta Systems in the running.
By strengthening local industries and reducing reliance on foreign suppliers, Israel aims to enhance its independence in defense supply chains. The increased production capacity of Israeli munitions companies further supports this strategy, ensuring a reliable source of equipment for the IDF even after the conflict subsides.
