The UK and Germany are set to sign a bilateral defense agreement allowing their forces to conduct joint military exercises near Russia’s borders, according to The Sunday Times. The deal will enhance cooperation in arms procurement and development, paving the way for future collaborations with the EU. This agreement is expected to enable British and German forces to train in NATO’s eastern border countries, like Estonia and Lithuania.
Beyond NATO exercises, Germany has participated in bilateral drills with Lithuania and Estonia. These exercises could soon include British forces post the new agreement. Defense Secretary John Healey highlighted similarities with the UK’s 2010 Lancaster House agreement with France, emphasizing joint military drills, technology development, and information sharing.
At the NATO summit, Healey announced plans for British troops’ drone warfare equipment upgrades and training in Estonia. Additionally, the UK will partner with Germany, France, Poland, and Italy to develop long-range missiles for Ukraine. This strategic collaboration aims to strengthen defense capabilities in the region and foster multinational military cooperation.
