British Foreign Minister in China advocating for Trade ‘Stability and Clarity’

The British Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, emphasized the importance of “stability and clarity” in trade relations with China. This statement comes as London, under a new Labor government, looks to reset ties with Beijing.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi remarked that bilateral relations are at a “new starting point” after a meeting with Lammy. He also pointed out that the era shouldn’t be defined by power competition among nations.

During his two-day visit to China, Lammy met with British business leaders in Shanghai to discuss trade links with China. The UK has undergone a shift in its approach towards China in the past decade, from strong support to criticism, and now, an effort to improve relations.

Lammy highlighted that while national security is a priority, businesses seek consistency, stability, and clarity in their dealings. The Labor government is conducting a comprehensive review of UK-China relations in light of allegations of cyber-hacking and espionage.

In talks with Wang, Lammy addressed contentious issues like Hong Kong, Taiwan, and human rights in Xinjiang, showing a willingness to engage in difficult conversations.
