Girls like Khadija, a 14-year-old primary five student, are forced to sell goods on busy roads to support their families financially. The prevalence of street hawking among school-age girls in Bauchi State has led to a decline in school attendance and enrollment. Economic factors, seasonal harvests, and cultural norms all contribute to the challenges faced by girls in accessing education.

The current Education Sector Plan in Bauchi State, which is set to expire soon, lacks clear gender-responsive policies to address the barriers to girl child education. Experts emphasize the importance of eliminating domestic labor, street hawking, and other obstacles that prevent girls from attending school.

Government officials, including the Bauchi State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Aliyu Tilde, have recognized the need for targeted interventions to support girls’ education. Initiatives such as cash transfers and scholarships are being implemented to encourage families to prioritize girls’ education and eliminate gender disparities in the education sector.

It is imperative for all stakeholders to work together to develop a comprehensive Gender Responsive Education Sector Plan that addresses the unique challenges faced by girls in Bauchi State. By focusing on inclusive strategies and empowering girls through education, we can create a brighter future for generations to come.
