Hong Kong police apprehended six teenagers for allegedly selling or possessing a new type of drug known as “space oil,” disguised as e-cigarette capsules. The group, consisting of four males and two females aged between 15 and 17, was arrested by Kwai Tsing district police during an enforcement action on Friday. Officers seized five capsules of the controlled drug etomidate, an anaesthetic, along with five vape pens.
While there is no standard formula for space oil, it typically includes etomidate, a prescription-only anaesthetic categorized as a Class A poison. The drug can be mixed with substances like cannabis, methamphetamine, and ketamine. The government’s Action Committee Against Narcotics warns that space oil can lead to severe physical and mental consequences, including addiction, memory loss, seizures, loss of consciousness, and even death.
The committee earlier reported a decrease of 8% in drug abuse cases in the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2023.
