British Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized the need for renewed dialogue between London and Beijing, advocating for “more diplomacy” during his recent visit to China. Meeting with Chinese officials, including Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing and traveling to Shanghai, Lammy stressed the importance of consistent UK policy towards China.

Addressing key issues such as Hong Kong, Xinjiang, and Taiwan, Lammy expressed concerns about tensions in the Taiwan Strait, calling for a peaceful resolution in the region. While China considers Taiwan part of its territory, Britain, like most countries, does not recognize Taiwan as an independent state and opposes any use of force to bring it under control.

Lammy also highlighted areas of potential cooperation between the UK and China, despite differences on certain issues. With both sides acknowledging the importance of maintaining open dialogue and a constructive relationship, the British Secretary’s visit aimed to pave the way for continued diplomatic engagement.
