Trump Labels Jan. 6 Insurrection as ‘Day of Love’

In a mind-boggling statement, former President Donald Trump described Jan. 6, 2021, the day of the failed insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, as a “day of love.” During a televised town hall, Trump faced questions about his inaction during the attack and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Responding to a voter who expressed concerns about his behavior, Trump claimed that 97% of his former administration still supported him, despite notable figures like Mike Pence distancing themselves. He defended the actions of his supporters, who he said came to Washington because they believed the election was rigged, despite evidence to the contrary.

Trump downplayed the violence and chaos of that day, falsely characterizing it as a peaceful gathering of love. He boasted about his calls for peace at the rally, conveniently omitting the hours he spent watching the violence unfold on TV without intervening.

This revisionist view of a dark chapter in American history further illustrates the divisive and dangerous rhetoric that continues to shape politics in the country.
