Cuba slowly recovering from mass blackout
Díaz-Canel blamed the US blockade for Cuba’s poor maintenance of its electricity-generating equipment
Cuba faced a major power outage that affected most of the country, with the National Electroenergetic System (SEN) reporting a gradual return to normalcy. The Electricity General Director Lázaro Guerra mentioned that emergency work continued into the early hours of Saturday following a breakdown at the Guiteras thermoelectric power plant.
President Miguel Díaz-Canel attributed the electricity crisis to the US-imposed embargo, which limited resources for maintenance and modernization. The lack of fuel and foreign currency exacerbated the situation, leading to widespread blackouts affecting over 51% of the country.
To mitigate the shortfall in electricity generation, Cuba has leased floating power plants, but the economy continues to suffer. Prime Minister Manuel Marrero acknowledged the worsening situation and announced a halt to non-essential work to conserve energy.
