Gunmen attack respected Mexican newspaper in Sinaloa capital during cartel battle
Gunmen targeted the office building of El Debate, a well-known Mexican media outlet, in Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa. This incident is part of the ongoing drug cartel violence plaguing the region.
The assailants fired at the media building, damaging several cars parked outside, although no injuries were reported. El Debate has been covering the escalating gun battles between rival gangs of the Sinaloa Cartel since September.
Journalists and their sources have faced increased threats amidst the recent violence outbreak. Journalists have been intimidated by armed individuals, preventing them from reporting on the conflicts happening in the outskirts of Culiacan.
This attack has been condemned by the Mexican Media Alliance as a direct assault on press freedom and the public’s right to information. Reporters Without Borders highlights the dangers faced by journalists in Mexico, with numerous casualties in recent years.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has expressed her disapproval of the attack and has deployed military personnel to Sinaloa to protect civilians, although the efforts to curb the violence have been challenging.
