Berlin Chancellor Renews Call on Israel to Comply with International Law

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterated his stance on Israel’s military actions against Hamas and Hezbollah, emphasizing the need for compliance with international law. During a joint press conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Scholz highlighted the importance of de-escalation and cease-fire to prevent further civilian suffering in the Middle East.

Scholz acknowledged the differences in views between Berlin and Ankara regarding Israel’s offensives but emphasized the shared goal of achieving peace through a two-state solution. Despite Germany’s historical responsibility towards Israel’s security, critics argue that the blanket support for the Netanyahu government might be affecting Germany’s international credibility.

As Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza, Scholz continues to advocate for a political process towards a viable two-state solution. The chancellor’s plea for diplomatic solutions echoes the necessity of international cooperation and adherence to humanitarian principles in conflict resolution.
