Revamp for foreign labor on eKathimerini.com

Exciting changes are on the horizon for the labor framework in Greece, specifically for foreign workers aiming to cover labor shortages. The government is planning to streamline the process of transferring workers from third countries to Greece, addressing the discrepancies between approved positions and actual hires. Currently, only one in five approved positions is being filled by imported labor due to lengthy processes and a lack of centralized data.

The Ministry of Migration Policy, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labor, is working on legislation to overhaul the system, potentially transferring responsibilities and reshaping existing procedures. Decentralized Administrations and Greek consular authorities are facing understaffing issues, further complicating the process for foreign workers.

To address residence problems, especially for seasonal workers, changes are being considered for the issuance of residence permits. This includes tackling the shortage of housing for migrant laborers, which often drives them to seek work in other European countries.
