Hong Kong authorities are considering integrating drones into their delivery system for lighter items such as letters and medication, paving the way for a “low-altitude economy.” Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong Wai-lun is leading a new working group aiming to amend regulations by next year to accommodate drone deliveries.
While the economic impact of wider drone use remains uncertain, Wong’s group plans to kickstart pilot projects by early 2025, open for applications by the end of this year. Industry partnerships are crucial, and some companies have already shown interest in participating.
The initiative focuses on activities below 1,000 metres, including drone deliveries and electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft passenger flights. Wong emphasized that the initial phase will prioritize drone delivery for items like takeaway meals and light packages such as letters and medications.
