It has been over six months since the Salgado Filho Airport’s runway was under water

Brazilian authorities announced the reopening of Porto Alegre’s Salgado Filho International Airport (POA/SBPA) in the State of Rio Grande do Sul after being closed due to unprecedented floods. The airport will resume commercial flights next week, with expectations of full operation, including international flights, before Christmas.

The initial phase will handle 128 daily flights by Azul, Gol, and Latam between 8 am and 10 pm. The federal government supported the airport’s restoration with R$ 426 million (US$ 74.83 million) to ensure modern infrastructure and prevent future closures due to natural disasters.

Local officials and Fraport Brasil CEO emphasized the importance of rebuilding the airport and implementing preventive measures. The reopening ceremony was attended by government representatives and aviation authorities, highlighting the collaboration between public and private sectors in restoring vital infrastructure.
