The Impact of Drought on Olive Oil Prices in Morocco
As the current agricultural season begins in Morocco, olive farmers are facing challenges due to the ongoing drought, which has led to a significant decrease in olive yields. Industry sources have reported that olive oil prices are currently ranging between 100 and 110 MAD per liter, with concerns about a potential price increase in the future.
Rachid Benali, president of the Moroccan Interprofessional Federation of Olive Oil, has addressed claims about the price of olive oil, emphasizing the impact of drought on production. While the quality of this season’s olive oil remains uncertain, the issue of importing olive oil to meet national demand has been raised by the Ministry of Agriculture.
Members of Parliament, such as Fadwa Al Hayani, have highlighted the potential impact of water scarcity on olive oil production and raised concerns about price manipulation by brokers. As the season progresses, the government is urged to take action to ensure fair prices for consumers.
