Mozambique opposition lawyer and official fatally shot

In a shocking turn of events, the lawyer for Mozambique’s opposition figure Venâncio Mondlane, along with an official from the same party, was fatally shot in Maputo. Elvino Dias, Mondlane’s attorney, and Podemos official Paulo Guambe were brutally assassinated in a cold-blooded murder, sparking outrage from local rights groups.

Witnesses allege that police prevented Guambe’s evacuation by an ambulance, engaged in censorship, and confiscated phones recording the scene. The police deny any wrongdoing and vow to prevent further acts of violence or disorder.

The European Union has called for an independent investigation into the killings, following reports of election irregularities. Mondlane disputes the election results, calling for a nationwide strike.

The violence in Mozambique highlights longstanding political tensions, as the country transitions from President Filipe Nyusi’s rule to a new leader.
