Man Charged with 1988 Rape in Melbourne
A 57-year-old man has been charged with the alleged 1988 rape of a young woman in a Melbourne inner suburb after being arrested in Queensland and extradited to Victoria. The charges include rape, kidnapping, and false imprisonment.
The victim, who was 19 at the time, was allegedly kidnapped, driven to Elwood Beach, and sexually assaulted. The case was reopened in May 2021 after new information came to light.
Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Brett Robinson expressed hope that the arrest would bring closure to the victim. The accused is remanded and set to appear in court next January.
