Lagos Lekki Airport fails to provide official intent – NCAA

By Dickson Omobola

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, has revealed that the Lagos State government has not yet submitted an official declaration of intent for the construction of an airport in Ibeju-Lekki. This document is essential for providing technical guidance and regulatory oversight in accordance with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations, Nig.CARs.

During a meeting with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Acting Director General of the NCAA, Captain Chris Najomo, disclosed that while the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development has approved the project, the formal declaration needs to be submitted at least 180 days before construction starts.

Governor Sanwo-Olu mentioned that the idea of an additional airport was initially considered in 2008, with a feasibility study conducted between 2008 and 2010 proving its viability. However, due to unforeseen setbacks, progress was delayed. He also confirmed that discussions with the former Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development resulted in approval for the establishment of an aerodrome in Ibeju-Lekki, with 4,000 hectares of land earmarked for the proposed Ibeju-Lekki Airport.
