Kebbi State Government Shuts Down College of Health Technology, Jega
The College of Health Technology in Jega, Kebbi State has been closed down by the state government following a demonstration by students of the college. The Commissioner for Higher Education, Isah Abubakar-Tunga, confirmed the closure, stating that allowing the demonstration to continue could lead to a more serious situation.
The students’ protest reportedly targeted the provost, leading to the burning of his house and the vandalization of his car. The students raised concerns about the lack of federal recognition for the courses offered by the college, which only provide state-level diplomas.
Other issues cited by the students included inadequate facilities such as toilets, clean water, poor sanitation, and ineffective leadership. The closure of the college is expected to last between three weeks to one month, with a requirement for each student to resume with a parent and sign an undertaking.
