In Ivory Coast, all student unions are being shut down following the killings of two students attributed to the powerful Student and School Federation (Fesci). Several Fesci members have been arrested in connection with the murders, revealing an underground tunnel for torture and a brothel on a university campus. Students report widespread extortion and fear from Fesci members, with one survivor sharing her traumatic experience. Ivory Coast’s Security Council conducted raids, seizing weapons and expelling thousands of undeclared residents on campuses. The announcement of the student union ban was met with celebration, as it is hoped to bring peace to the campuses. Originally a student body, Fesci evolved into an anti-government group involved in organized crime, with former leaders transitioning into politics. The ban is seen as a step towards ending the reign of fear and violence perpetuated by Fesci on university campuses in Ivory Coast.
