Italy’s Defense Minister, Guido Crosetto, has voiced concerns over Israeli strikes targeting the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, UNIFIL. Crosetto emphasized the need to strengthen UN forces in Lebanon and update rules of engagement to ensure a more credible and effective response.
Crosetto urged Israel to abide by international law and protect civilians in both Gaza and Lebanon, including the UN contingent. He highlighted the importance of Israel’s cooperation in enhancing the deterrence capability of UN peacekeepers to prevent the use of force.
The Defense Minister also warned against Israel’s calls for UN forces to leave the border area, stating that it would undermine the organization’s credibility. Despite the challenges, evacuation plans for Italian soldiers in the UN mission have been updated and are ready for implementation, if necessary.
The recent Israeli attacks on UNIFIL positions in southern Lebanon have raised global concerns about larger military plans. The intensified assault has resulted in a significant number of casualties, with over 13,000 people affected by Israeli airstrikes since last October.
