In a statement to RTÉ News, she cited her health and energy levels as reasons for her decision, emphasizing that politicians are only human. This unexpected announcement means that 18 of the 35 Fine Gael TDs elected in 2020 will not be returning to politics.
As a strong advocate for rural issues, Humphreys was a key asset for the party and was expected to top the polls in her constituency. Known for her common-sense approach and straight-talking style, she has been a Cabinet member for the past decade. However, she believes that she lacks the energy to commit to another five years in politics.
This decision comes as a surprise to many, as she was seen as a rising star in the party. The Minister for Social Protection’s departure will undoubtedly leave a void to be filled in Fine Gael’s ranks.
