Italian Defence Minister Warns of Growing Global Insecurity at G7 Meeting
The Group of Seven (G7) defence ministers convened in Naples, Italy to address escalating tensions in the Middle East and the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This marks the group’s first ministerial meeting solely focused on defence.
Italian Minister of Defence, Guido Crosetto, highlighted the precarious nature of the global security framework amidst competing world views. The meeting aimed to delve into various pressing issues, including the Middle East conflict, China’s military activities near Taiwan, and tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
Crosetto emphasized the divide between countries following international law and those disregarding democracy and resorting to military aggression. At the same time, concerns lingered over Israel’s recent actions in Gaza and the potential impact of US election outcomes on Ukraine’s conflict.
As Ukrainian President Zelenskyy sought support from EU and NATO allies, discussion also touched on North Korea allegedly aiding Russia in the Ukraine conflict. This G7 meeting shed light on the complex geopolitical landscape and looming security challenges.
