Cyprus’ House of Representatives has approved a 1.5% wage increase for public and semi-public sector employees following a debated agreement with trade unions. The decision, passed with 25 votes in favor and 17 against, sparked division within the legislature.
The law, effective from October 1, provides a 1.5% salary raise for civil servants and pensioners, with the minimum annual increase set at 331.28 euros. Members of the Public and Educational service commissions will also see a rise in salaries.
Opposition to the wage hike came from DISY MP Harris Georgiades, citing concerns over rising public sector expenses. Conversely, EDEK leader Marinos Sizopoulos critiqued parliament’s involvement in the employer-employee agreement ratification.
