Apple has decided to remove the app of US state-run Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s media project, Current Time TV, from its Russian online store due to content violations of Russian laws. The tech giant cited illegal content and non-compliance with verification rules as reasons for the app’s removal, along with content produced by a blacklisted organization in Russia.
RFE/RL, funded by the US government and focused on anti-Soviet propaganda during the Cold War, created Current Time in 2017 as a separate Russian-language outlet alongside Voice of America. The Russian media regulator requested the removal of its products, following Russia’s block of RFE/RL due to the publication of false information about the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
The EU and US have also taken action against Russian media organizations for spreading disinformation. In response, Russia blacklisted RFE/RL and its subsidiaries in February 2024. The US imposed sanctions on RT’s parent company and its subsidiaries in September 2024.
